by

The next poetry slam has been scheduled for January 28th, and we’d love for you to pack the Echo Arts gallery. We’ll open doors at 7:30, start the slam at 8, beginning an epic battle to decide who we’re sending to Columbus, OH for the Women of the World poetry slam. There’s an open signup for the following structure: 1 minute round, 3 minute round, 2 minute round, and then a last two-poet 3 minute round to choose a rep for Punch Out Poetry in the 2011 Women of the World poetry slam in Columbus, OH this March.

November’s slam was amazing, and featured lots of new voices, new styles, and new poems. We featured Courtney McLean, who was a hit with her bawdy, open-minded uke stylings, and got an amazing sac poem from Rodrigo Sanchez-Chavarria. The slam was followed by a music jam/open mic, and was a great time. January’s sac will be IBé. IBé is the recipient of a 2010 Midwestern Voices Award, a 2009 Urban Griots’ Cultural Award, a 2005 Jerome/SASE Verve Grant, and a 2004 Minnesota Academy Award nominee for Best Spoken Word. Stay posted for news on our feature, and for post-slam celebrations.

A brilliant slam, with lots of different styles, lots of new voices, and a great audience. I forgot to bring my camera, but this shot is by Lewis Mundt, of Courtney McLean (our feature) and all our competing poets.

Pop Competitors 11-28

Congrats to Sierra, who won the slam and guaranteed her spot in the finals slam in May; Misty, who also guaranteed her place in finals; and Syd, who guaranteed her spot in January’s slam. Thank you so much to everyone who came out. You rocked that room.

Our third slam of the season, in the beautiful Echo Arts gallery in lowertown St. Paul. The top two winners of the slam will earn places in the finals slam this May. October’s slam was a heated battle, presenting many styles and levels of experience and a big intelligent crowd, and November is likely to be just as amazing.

It’s our usual 3 minute, 1 minute, 3 minute round structure, and features musician, storyteller, and comedian Courtney McLean. It’s the day after Thanksgiving, get your overly full self to lowertown and binge on poetry instead of purchases.

NEW SEASON! SLAM SCHEDULE POSTED!

September 15, 2010
by

After an amazing first National Poetry Slam, where our all-rookie team felt well loved and got a number of murmurs of “these are poets to watch out for”, we’re ready to start a new season of slams, and hopefully get an influx of women who are interested in getting their poetry out there. That’s right, with Syd Malicious in school, Alice Shindelar on tour, Ruth F. Kohtz in retirement, and Inky (that’s me) hosting- the stage needs new voices, and lots of them.

Drag your friend who has been writing forEVer out on Friday the 24th to Echo Arts, and encourage her to share her work. Or, you know, drag your own self out there. Guys, we love having you in the audience- don’t think you’re being excluded. We’re friendly, I promise. Sign up starts at 7:30, slam starts at 8.
